EXT 200 | Externship II: Introduction to Interventional Diagnostology Total: 160 Clinical Hours on site at ADOM This course introduces the emerging field of interventional diagnostology, where ultrasound is applied not only for imaging but also for guiding therapeutic procedures in a radiation-free environment. Students will study case-based examples of procedures such as fine needle aspiration, core needle and vacuum-assisted biopsies, cyst and abscess drainage, joint aspiration, paracentesis, and thoracentesis. Mock procedures and simulation labs allow students to practice the same positioning, imaging, and guidance skills used in clinical interventions, while remaining within the scope of diagnostic training. A special emphasis is placed on ablative therapies, including venous and arterial ablations for vascular disease and tumor treatment. These are explored through case studies, procedural breakdowns, and guided demonstrations, helping students understand their role in advancing non-radiative, image-guided intervention while not yet performing them in patient care. The course also introduces advanced applications such as intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), intracardiac echocardiography (ICE), contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS), and foundational exposure to transesophageal echocardiography (TEE). Learning is reinforced with simulation modules, case-based discussions, and optional cadaveric demonstrations if available, providing students with realistic, hands-on exposure to procedural imaging while staying within educational and legal training limits. Through case analysis, simulation, and procedural mapping, students gain an appreciation for the role of diagnostologists in supporting interventional teams, preparing them to integrate emerging therapies into safe, patient-centered practice.
