Course Description

DMSVTD 420 | Endocrine Ultrasound (Pancreas, Thyroid, Parathyroid, Adrenal, Thymus, Pituitary) Total: 40 Hours | E-Lecture: 12 Hours | E-Lab: 12 Hours | On Site Lab: 16 Hours This course trains students in ultrasound techniques to evaluate hormone-producing glands including the thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal glands, pancreas, thymus, and pituitary. Students gain hands-on skills in scanning, vascular assessment, and interpretation of common endocrine presentations such as cysts, hyperplasia, and tumors. A unique feature of the course is the integration of microbiology, exploring how bacteria, fungi, and viruses inhabit benign tumors and influence endocrine disease through inflammation and immune modulation. Biopsy and aspiration are reframed not solely as tools for distinguishing malignancy, but as methods for uncovering microbial involvement within tumors and cysts. Sonographic findings are taught in close correlation with laboratory data, hormone levels, inflammatory markers, and hematology, to develop a holistic diagnostic approach while also recognizing the limits of laboratory values when considered alone. Guided by the Nussbaumer Life Framework, students learn to interpret life itself as a continuum of endocrine-controlled plasma and lipid reactions: fluid as the earliest form of plaque and the beginning of life, stone as the body’s final solidification before collapse, and gas as the endpoint of death. Intermediate states, including lipids, plasmas, cysts, and tumors, are shown as biological transitions governed by endocrine regulators such as the parathyroid, thyroid, pancreas, and adrenal glands, and shaped by microbial and immune forces. This integrative perspective positions microbiology, laboratory science, and sonography side by side, equipping students to understand endocrine health and disease as dynamic, evolving states rather than isolated findings.
