Course Description

DMSVTD 510 | Introduction to Breast Ultrasound & Vasculature Total: 40 Hours | E-Lecture: 12 Hours | E-Lab: 12 Hours | On Site Lab: 16 Hours This introductory course provides training in breast ultrasound imaging techniques with an emphasis on vascular assessment and a whole-body approach to breast health. Students will develop skills to perform detailed examinations as well as volumetric imaging to differentiate normal breast anatomy from abnormalities such as benign and malignant tumors, metastatic tumors, ulcerated masses, cysts, fibroadenomas, axillary fullness, and lymph node evaluation. The breast is recognized as a gland with both exocrine and endocrine functions. Its exocrine role is defined by the secretion of milk through ducts to the nipple, while its endocrine role reflects its response to and regulation by hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, and prolactin. This dual identity underscores the importance of evaluating the breast not only as an isolated structure but also within the broader systemic and hormonal context. The course highlights the importance of assessing breast vasculature to enhance diagnostic accuracy and refine the early detection of breast pathologies in both male and female populations. Discussions extend beyond imaging to explore factors influencing breast health, including hormonal balance, lifestyle considerations, and systemic circulatory function. Lab sessions incorporate simulations and phantoms for hands-on training, ensuring students gain confidence in performing accurate, non-invasive breast evaluations that support comprehensive patient care.
