Course Description

DMSVTD 250 | Practical Ultrasound Techniques Total: 8 Hours | E-Lecture: 0 Hours | E-lab: 0 Hours | On Site Lab: 8 Hours Mastering the Technical Aspects of Ultrasound Imaging with The Nussbaumer Method, this course provides a comprehensive understanding of the technical aspects of ultrasound imaging, emphasizing the integration of holistic principles and patient-centered practices. Students will explore ultrasound system components, scanning techniques, imaging modes, image production, and protocols essential for conducting diagnostic ultrasound examinations accurately, safely, and with a focus on whole-person care. The curriculum covers topics such as hemodynamics, bioeffects, quality assurance, and clinical safety protocols while highlighting the ethical responsibilities of compassionate and patient-focused imaging practices. Students will develop skills to optimize image quality and adjust system controls for 2D grayscale, M-mode, color flow Doppler, spectral Doppler, power Doppler, and advanced technologies such as 3D/4D ultrasound, elastography, and fusion imaging. The course emphasizes the importance of creating accurate documentation, maintaining patient confidentiality, and tailoring imaging approaches to meet the unique needs of each patient. Essential measurements and calculations for diagnostic imaging—including distance, area, volume, weight, gestational age, and spectral analysis—are covered in detail, ensuring students are prepared to deliver precise and reliable diagnostic data. In addition to these technical skills, students will implement safety principles, perform resolution and phantom testing, calibrate displays, and manage system maintenance, storage, and communication protocols to ensure the reliability and accuracy of ultrasound systems.
