Course Description
DMSVTD 310 | Principles of Diagnostology & Radiation Safety Total: 8 Hours | E- Lecture: 4 Hours | E-Lab: 4 Hours | On Site Lab: 0 Hours This introductory course introduces Diagnostology, an educational framework focused on investigating the underlying and contributing factors associated with disease through systems-based diagnostic reasoning. Students explore relationships among structure, function, physiology, laboratory findings, environmental influences, and diagnostic imaging rather than viewing findings in isolation. Foundational concepts in hematology, histology, microbiology, osteopathic principles, laboratory science, and diagnostic ultrasound are introduced to support root-cause investigation and interdisciplinary correlation. Students examine how factors such as microorganisms, parasites, toxins, heavy metals, pH and acid–base balance, and other physiological changes may relate to tissue and systemic disease processes. Emphasis is also placed on radiation awareness and patient safety. Students compare ionizing and non-ionizing diagnostic modalities and explore strategies for minimizing unnecessary radiation exposure while recognizing the role of ultrasound in safe diagnostic assessment. This course establishes the foundational principles of Diagnostology used throughout the curriculum, emphasizing root-cause investigation, systems-based reasoning, diagnostic correlation, and radiation awareness.
